14 Karat Gold Enamel Saint Benedict Pendant

The Saint Benedict medal is one of the oldest devotional objects still worn today. Its design carries the initials of a Latin prayer for protection, and it has been struck, blessed, and worn continuously for centuries — long enough that the shape is recognized immediately by the people it means something to.

This one is an oval in 14 karat yellow gold at 19.8mm, the largest of our pendants and substantial enough to read clearly. The design is picked out in enamel, a glass coloring fused into the metal by heat, which is what gives the detail its depth and lets the lettering stand apart from the gold.

Care

Gold does not tarnish and needs no replating. Enamel is glass, so it is the part to protect: avoid knocking the pendant against hard surfaces, keep it away from chlorine and ultrasonic cleaners, and store it separately. Clean it with a soft dry cloth rather than a polishing cloth, which can dull the enamel over time.
